THERE is a Siamese twin-like quality to the foremost of last night's inductees into the AFL Hall of Fame. Nathan Buckley, James Hird, Mark Ricciuto and Michael Voss were not so much separated at birth as fused at that time. There are many worse fates.
They were born within three years of one another. They began their careers a season apart. Hird played 16 years, the other three 15. Ricciuto proved the most indestructible; he is the only of the four to have reached 300 games.
They shared even their Brownlow Medals, though here a contrast emerges. Hird and Voss were paired in 1996, while still fresh-faced, with their best years to come. Buckley and Ricciuto claimed their medals in 2003, as twilight approached. With them was Adam Goodes, a natural successor.
