The 47-year-old was diagnosed with the illness just a few months ago and had been undergoing radiation treatment and chemotherapy. He passed away at Melbourne's Freemasons Hospital about 11.30am. Wight retired from football in 1995 after a 10-year career with the Demons, becoming one of the first players signed under the AFL's ambitious Irish recruitment policy. He was followed to Melbourne by fellow Irish recruit Jim Stynes, who is also battling cancer.
