CADEL Evans remains in second overall in the Tour de France after surviving a brutal fifth stage that left several riders battered and bruised, finishing 11th in a bunch sprint from Carhaix.
The stage was won by British sprinter Mark Cavendish, who elated in his 16th stage victory after eclipsing Belgian Philippe Gilbert and Spaniard Jose Joaquin Rojas.
Norwegian Thor Hushovd retains the leader's yellow jersey by one second over Evans. Frank Schleck, of Luxembourg, is third - only four seconds down - with Scot David Millar fourth at eight seconds.
