Cadel Evans says he was "really, really, really frightened" after slipping to third place overall in the Tour de France and surviving a stage that will live in infamy after two breakaway riders were wiped out by a France TV car and reigning champion Alberto Contador dropped further from contention.
Evans started stage nine only one second behind race leader Thor Hushovd. After 208km over eight climbs and after witnessing four separate accidents, Evans sits 2mins 26secs behind Frenchman Thomas Voeckler.
