The sacked employees represent about 11 per cent of the league office workforce in New York, New Jersey and internationally.
Spokesman Mike Bass said the layoffs were not a direct result of the lockout, but a response to the same underlying issue: the league's expenses far outpacing revenues.
''The roughly 11 per cent reduction in headcount ... is part of larger cost-cutting measures to reduce our costs by $US50 million ($A46.5 million) across all areas,'' Bass said.
