The rookie Belgium rider on the Omega Pharma Lotto squad stunned the high priests of the Tour de France to take the honours on the final stage of three gut-wrenching days in the Pyrenees.
The little known Vanendert, just 21, announced himself as a pure climber to cross the finish line in 5hrs 13mins 29secs to beat home Olympic champion Samuel Sanchez by 21 seconds, followed by Andy Schleck, who crossed 46 seconds down, in a small, but elite group that also included Cadel Evans.
There was no change in the overall with Thomas Voeckler of Europcar still in yellow for a sixth day but with the individual time trial in Grenoble and more climbing to come in the Alps.
