Returning to the pool for the first time since he led the 4 x 100m freestyle relay team to a surprise gold medal on Sunday night, the 20-year-old Port Macquarie native seemed completely comfortable as the new favourite to win the 100m freestyle title tomorrow night.
He swam eyeball to eyeball with American contender Nathan Adrian down the second lap of his heat before effortlessly moving ahead to win in 48.21sec, well outside the ground-breaking 47.49sec he swam in the relay but fast enough to show that he is ready to fire in the individual event.
