The return to greatness of Tiger Woods can be put on hold for the time being while the golfing artist known as the best to play the game chases more modest goals. Making the cut at the 2011 PGA Championship would be a start, although that is far from certain after the former world No1 hacked and chopped and sweated his way to opening round 77 at the Atlanta Athletic Club.
That seven-over-par effort was Woods's worst ever first round at a major and his worst opening round at any tournament since 1996. He finished the day 14 shots behind the leader, Steve Stricker, and sounding bereft. He has sacked his caddie, lost his temper and misplaced his swing. "I have been through this before, but this is a major championship and once you get to a major championship you just let it fly," he said.
