As arguments raged over whether athletics chiefs should swiftly abandon the 'one false start and out' rule which abetted Bolt's self-destruction here on Sunday night, Coe, the chairman of the London 2012 organising committee, said he was happy for the rule to be in place at the Olympics.
Not only did he believe the episode would ensure that Bolt would focus on not being a "repeat offender" in 2012 but he added: "I'd bet on him to win the gold medal in London. You would be a brave man not to."
Bolt finally broke his silence to insist in a bland statement that, though he was "extremely disappointed" to surrender his title in such surreal fashion, he was not dwelling on it and would be striving to make his supporters "proud" by successfully defending his 200m crown on Friday and Saturday.
