The rookie spinner, along with NSW medium-pacer Trent Copeland, was named last night by captain Michael Clarke to debut in the opening Test of the three-match series.
Copeland earned his place by taking six wickets in the tour match in Colombo last weekend, while Lyon becomes the 11th spin bowler used by Australia since the retirement of Shane Warne.
NSW batsman Usman Khawaja will play in his second Test after he got the nod for the vacant No6 spot in the batting line-up ahead of Shaun Marsh.
