Dally M Medal winner Billy Slater breathed a huge sigh of relief after a decision by coach Craig Bellamy to stand him down from Melbourne's final game of the season did not prevent him being crowned the game's best player.
In a thrilling finish, Slater held on to win the award by two points. Wests Tigers five-eighth Benji Marshall pulled up just short after failing to poll any votes in the club's final game of the season against Cronulla. "It's a proud moment and I'm sure once I've finished playing it will be a highlight," Slater said.
