Freed from the close binds of striving to deliver back-to-back premierships to the club for the first time in 75 years, Malthouse took to the airwaves yesterday to speak candidly about the final year of his 12-season stint with the Magpies, including the challenges the club faced in the final weeks of its premiership pursuit.
He canvassed his decision - relayed to Collingwood about six weeks ago - to turn down the director-of-coaching role as defined by the club, his belief that he and successor Nathan Buckley were never great mates and worked on a ''professional basis'', and rebutted McGuire's claim that he was ''physically and emotionally spent''.
Malthouse says his decision to knock back the role - following on from his infamous July interview on The Footy Show - was communicated to the club through his manager Peter Sidwell about six weeks ago.
