Roebuck was a writer of strong opinions, brave and knowledgeable enough about cricket to express the thoughts most others would have kept to themselves.
In a memorable column filed an hour after the fractious Sydney Test match against India in January 2008, Roebuck called for the head of Test skipper Ricky Ponting.
"If Cricket Australia cares a fig for the tattered reputation of our national team in our national sport, it will not for a moment longer tolerate the sort of arrogant and abrasive conduct seen from the captain and his senior players over the past few days."
He also once called for new Test captain Michael Clarke to decide between his cricketing career and his fiancee, Lara Bingle after Clarke flew home before a Test in New Zealand in an attempt to mend his relationship.
