In heartbreaking scenes, the man who had only to finish in front of his teammate to seal his third Supercars title was forced to sit helpless in his car as mechanics worked frantically to put him back on the track and save his bid.
Leading and seemingly on his way to the sealing the championship, the Holden driver hit a concrete wall on the Sydney Olympic Park circuit when a damper failed. The impact badly damaged his car.
"I have been around long enough to understand how up and down this sport can be," the Team Vodafone driver said.
