Barcelona have confirmed that striker David Villa will be sidelined for between "four and five months" after he suffered a broken leg.
The Spaniard fractured his left tibia in the Fifa Club World Cup semi-final against Qatari side Al Sadd in Japan.
A statement on the club's website said: "In the coming hours, Villa will return to Barcelona to be operated on."
"We will have to win the Club World Cup without him but he is in our hearts," added manager Pep Guardiola.
