Rooney watched his team's New Year's Eve horror show against Blackburn - a 3-2 defeat - from a corporate box at Old Trafford after manager Sir Alex Ferguson left him out of the team.
Ferguson said his star striker 'hadn't trained well' during the week and had 'a few strains'.
It is understood, however, that the England international had turned up for training feeling the effects of a night out with Darron Gibson and Jonny Evans and their partners.
