Stynes, who took on the presidency after the resignation of Paul Gardner in June 2008, will step out of the public spotlight to concentrate on his battle with melanoma and spend more time with his family. Over the past two-and-a-half years he has had 23 tumours removed and has had six bouts of brain surgery.
Melbourne's board is set to meet this afternoon to determine who takes on the presidency, with acting president Don McLardy expected to be given the nod. Stynes has thrown his full support behind McLardy, the man who has led the board in an interim capacity since Stynes publicly revealed he had cancer in mid-2009.
