Sam Stosur and Sophie Ferguson joined the California-based Ball in progressing to the second round as Australia enjoyed mixed success on day two of the French Open.

Peter Luczak lost in straight sets to world No. 1 and defending champion Roger Federer, 6-4 6-1 6-2, while Alicia Molik and Jelena Dokic also fell at the first hurdle.

Stosur cruised into the second round with a 7-5 6-1 win over Romanian Simona Halep while Ferguson came back after losing the first set 6-1 to win the next two 6-2.

Molik was dumped out of the tournament 6-0 6-4 by well-fancied Serbian fourth seed Jelena Jankovic while Dokic was brushed aside 6-2 6-2 by Czech Lucie Safarova.

But Ball's victory was doubtless the most impressive.

The 22-year-old world no.115, who warmed up for Paris by making it six wins from six in the Davis Cup victory over Japan a fortnight ago, came from two sets down to beat Germany's Philipp Petzschner 9-7 in the fifth.

Luczak worked hard to stick with the top seed, but was no match for the Swiss champion, who committed only 11 unforced errors and lost just 14 of 64 points on his serve.

"If it was anyone else, I'd be getting pretty angry," he said. "He just had me on a string and just was toying with me at the end. I think he was enjoying it."

Federer, who completed a career Grand Slam by winning his first French Open crown in 2009, will be joined in round two by compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka, seeded 20th, after he beat Jan Hajek 6-1 6-3 6-3.

Elsewhere, British number one Andy Murray also battled back from two sets down to beat Richard Gasquet.

The Scotsman finished the stronger against his tiring French oppnent, winning 4-6 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 6-2 6-1 in four hours and four minutes.

Third seed Novak Djokovic dropped a set against Kazakhstan's Evgeny Korolev but came through strongly to reach round two with a 6-1 3-6 6-1 6-3 win.

Fellow seeds Ivan Ljubicic, Tomas Berdych, John Isner and Marcos Baghdatis all progressed in straight sets, while 12th seed Fernando Gonzalez overcame Brazil's Thiago Alves 6-2 4-6 6-4 6-4.

But Spanish 21st seed Tommy Robredo was beaten 6-4 6-4 6-3 by Serbia's Viktor Troicki and his compatriot Feliciano Lopez also made an early exit, beaten 6-1 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 by Germany's Julian Reister.

Serena Williams, the women's top seed and 2002 champion, overcame a shaky start to beat Stefanie Voegele 7-6 (7-2) 6-2.
