Jarmila Groth flew the flag for her adopted country on day five of the French Open, dismissing Japanese veteran Kimiko Date Krumm in impressive style, 6-0 6-3.

The former Slovakian, ranked 109 in the world, will now face fellow naturalised Aussie Anastasia Rodionova, who ousted former countrywoman and 21st seed Vera Zvonareva of Russia, 6-4 6-4.

But Sophie Ferguson's Paris campaign ended in the second round when she lost 6-2 6-2 to Italy's Francesca Schiavone.

Rain again interrupted play at Roland Garros with several matches held over from Wednesday night only able to be resumed late in the day.

Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Stosur were unable to get on court for their second-round matches.

One late starter was Scotland's Andy Murray, who finally beat Juan Ignacio Chela 6-2 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 6-2 to book a third-round date on Friday with 25th seed Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis, who finished off Spaniard Marcel Granollers 4-6, 6-1, 7-5, 6-2.

Elsewhere, Italian Fabio Fognini overcame Frenchman Gaël Monfils 2-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, 9-7 when they resumed a match that had been halted in the gloom of Wednesday night.

American Andy Roddick's most potent weapon was severely blunted but despite losing his serve seven times and enduring two delays and damp, windy conditions, he managed to defeat Blaz Kavcic 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.

In the women's draw, 2008 French Open champion Ana Ivanovic, on the comeback trail after a shoulder injury, was beaten by 28th-seeded Alisa Kleybanova 6-3, 6-0 to make her earliest exit in six apperances at Roland Garros.

The no. 4 seed Jelena Jankovic, no. 5 Elena Dementieva and no. 11 Li Na all won, while no. 8 seed Agnieszka Radwanska and no. 32 Kateryna Bondarenko joined Zvonareva as seeded players to take their leave.

Sixteen singles matches were postponed, including Serena Williams', meaning they will not play their second-round matches until at least the sixth day of the tournament.
