Sam Willoughby : BMX

Sam Willoughby

Sam Willoughby became BMX World Champion last year after taking out the World Cup final round in France. After an unconvincing performance in the time trials, where he finished 17th, Willoughby scraped through to the final round by a single point. The 18-year-old from Adelaide then went on to become the youngest rider to win the World Cup Series - and first Australian to claim the title.

01Who is your hero/heroine - sporting or otherwise?

I look up to a lot of people in, and out of, sport. (Fellow cyclists) Travis Pastrana, Sam Hill, Jared Graves and Maris Strombergs are just a few of my idols.

02What was your greatest act of courage?

When I was competing in the World Cup BMX title in 2009, I had to make the final to have any chance of winning it. I crashed in my first two heats and it was looking near impossible that I would ever make it. I managed to keep my head on, however, and came back and made the final and won.

The Adelaide Crows winning back-to-back premierships in 1997-98.

‘Sweet'. When something's good, I always say ‘sweet' for some reason.

12What would you like, but can't have?
This sound weird but I have always wanted to go to a school which is a BMX school, where maths is learning about gear ratios and gym percentages, science is learning about vitamin supplements, PE involves sprints and track work, technology is bike mechanics and English is learning how to be a race commentator.

13What are you reading at the moment?

Nathan Buckley's book, ‘All I Can Be'.

Travis Pastrana's documentary, 199 Lives.

The Winter Olympics sport called curling makes no sense to me.

As a positive role model - and fun, caring person.
