Peter Johnston: WTA chief, former player

johnston-peter2-300310Peter Johnston is a senior vice-president of the women's professional  tennis tour, the WTA, and is based in Tampa, Florida. A former Australian tour player, he later spent 15 years in a variety of management roles at Tennis Australia including development, marketing and events. Johnston (pictured, left, with Australian Davis Cup captain John Fitzgerald) was also deputy tournament director of the Australian Open.

01Who is your hero/heroine - sporting or otherwise?

Not really one who has had a hero over the years. Pretty hard to go past Roger Federer in terms of being the complete package at the moment.

02What was your greatest act of courage?

Not very courageous on the sporting field which is why I began to play tennis instead of AFL footy. You wouldn't see me featuring in the "hard ball gets'' stats.

03What is the most memorable sporting event you have witnessed?

Love all the big tennis events, obviously, but going to a World Series baseball game here in Tampa was unique.

04Which sporting event in history would you most like to have attended?

Any year of the US Masters golf.

05What keeps you awake at night?

Jet lag.

06Which talent would you most like to have?

An ability to speak multiple languages.

07What bores you?

American TV.

08On which occasions do you lie?

09What trait do you most deplore in others?

Lack of transparency; people who don't show respect for others.

10Who embodies your idea of a ‘good sport'?

Rafael Nadal.

People who don't show respect for others.

12What words or phrases do you most overuse?

Apparently I say "what is the next step?" quite a lot.

13What are you reading at the moment?

"Skinny Dip " by Carl Hiassen.

14What is the best sports book written, or film made?

Book: 'A Handful of Summers', by Gordon Forbes (yarns from the tennis circuit in the 1960s).
Film: 'When we were Kings' - which looked at the Rumble in the Jungle.

15Which figure in history would you most like to have been?

Don't know. It seems like every historical figure experienced problems at some time ...

16What is the greatest sports venue in the world?

Augusta National Golf Club.

17Which living person/people do you most admire?

Vanessa , Francesca and Vivienne Johnston. They have a lot to put up with.

18Who is Australia's greatest sportsman/woman?

We have had, and do have, so many ... and they are great for our international reputation.

19What sport don't you ‘get'?

Curling is one getting some focus at the moment. What is that all about?

20How would you like to be remembered?

Fondly.
